2026 Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming seems particularly strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.

Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
