Adolescent Discovered Dead After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days after being wrongly blamed of taking the ashes of a dead baby during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Accusations Start
The inquest heard how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a statement read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later determined the alleged burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed taken remains attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the family by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son told her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could use the toilet anytime he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called Kai's family telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not got that communication.
Official Finding
Senior investigator informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently embellished and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and following his questioning he was released whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a personal action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
