Debunking Venezuelan Victory Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.

Computer-created images claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest after his capture by the United States have garnered countless of impressions online.

The Way AI Images of the President Emerged Within Hours

The first fake AI image apparently displaying him led off a plane circulated a brief time later. This image was not shared any official American sources; rather, it was uploaded on X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

We’ve checked the SynthID tool, confirming the image was generated or edited with generative AI.

More AI-generated images began to spread in the ensuing hours, appearing to show additional perspectives of the leader detained. Visible watermarks on these pictures indicate they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

AI analysis confirms all of these images were similarly generated or edited generative models.

Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Continued

The former US president posted the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. However, despite the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures continued to spread but were modified to show the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics indicate these updated fakes were originally uploaded on the video platform by a digital art account. Similarly, SynthID found the new graphics were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.

Important Facts:

  • Synthetic media gained traction following the events of the president's apprehension.
  • The initial fabricated picture was shared within hours on platform X.
  • Detection software like Google’s SynthID helped to identify the pictures as inauthentic.
  • Fabrications persisted to circulate and be updated despite the release of real images.
  • The origin of several fakes was traced to social media profiles focused on graphic design.
