European Cup Action This Evening: Chelsea v Barcelona & Additional Games

Greetings to a fresh evening of thrilling European Cup football. Nine matches are planned for this evening, including three English teams in action. Chelsea face Barcelona in the marquee fixture of the night, while The Magpies visit Marseille and City welcome Leverkusen.

League Table

We're at the midway point of the group stage, meaning the table is beginning to form. All six English teams are presently in the top 12, but there are only 2 pts separating 5th and sixteenth position, thus there's a whiff of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. Everything is to play for.

Match Schedule

Here are this evening's fixtures, each kicking off at 8pm unless stated:

  • Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (17:45)
  • Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (17:45)
  • Bodo/Glimt v Juventus
  • Barcelona take on Chelsea
  • Dortmund v Villarreal
  • Man City v Leverkusen
  • Marseille v Newcastle
  • Qarabag play Napoli
  • Athletic Bilbao clash with Slavia Prague

Squad Updates

Wesley Fofana, Moises Caicedo, Garnacho, Malo Gusto and Estevao all come into the Chelsea team. Excluded are Adarabioyo, Andrey Santos, Gittens, Pedro and Liam Delap.

Lamine Yamal starts for Barcelona; Rashford is among the substitutes.

Substitutes: Wojciech Szczesny, Diego Kochen, Raphinha, Marcus Rashford, Andreas Christensen, Casado, Gerard, Olmo, Noah Darvich, Dro Fernandez, Bardghji.

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter between Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semi-final of 2004, claimed by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Barcelona and Chelsea have some past encounters.

Early Match Updates

Only a single goal in the first half of the two early games. Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has earned Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead at the Dutch side.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although The Magpies arrived in the south of France fresh from their restorative two-one home English top-flight win against Manchester City on the weekend, and having defeated Union SG, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their only on the road win since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to discuss the mental side of this travel sickness. “The European Cup is different to Premier League games,” said the manager, whose team are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine pts from a available twelve and automatic progression to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”

We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the MBM equivalent of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
