Substantial Online Failure Impacts Numerous Websites and Apps

An extensive online outage has impacted dozens online platforms and apps around the world, with users noting problems accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s online infrastructure system.

The affected apps include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-managed services like its main retail website and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems accessing the HMRC site on Monday morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners took to social media to report their security devices were not working.

Just within Britain, notifications of issues on particular apps ran into the many thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a division that offers vital online infrastructure for numerous businesses, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest online services service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “elevated failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the east coast of the America. The ripple effect seemed to affect platforms globally, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the identical platforms in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, further indicated a rise in outages on Monday morning, and numerous instances situated in the Virginia area, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the issues began.
