WHO Confronts Major Staff Cuts Following United States Financial Withdrawal

This international health organization revealed plans to reduce its staff by almost a quarter – amounting to over two thousand jobs – before mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Triggers Major Reorganization

This move follows following the US, formerly the organization's biggest contributor, pulled out financial support previously this year.

The US government was contributing about 18% of the organization's overall funding, causing a significant financial gap.

Projected Workforce Cuts

According to organizational estimates, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.

This reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular departures.

"The past year was among the most difficult in our existence, while we have navigated a challenging but necessary process of prioritization and realignment," commented the organization's director-general.

Financial Gap Remains

The Switzerland-headquartered organization currently confronts a funding gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming biennium, amounting to nearly a fourth of its required funding.

This figure represents an improvement from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in May.

Excluded Finances

These budget calculations exclude an additional $1.1bn in potential contributions from ongoing negotiations with multiple contributors.

A spokesperson for the agency noted that the current unsecured part of the budget is in fact smaller than in earlier years, crediting this to several reasons:

  • Reduced overall budget
  • Initiation of a fresh donor outreach effort
  • Higher in participating countries' mandatory contributions

The restructuring initiative is currently nearing its end, allowing the organization to progress with a renewed operational model.
